Good rain in the offing for Peninsular India

August 13, 2015 2:13 PM |

Good rain in the offing for Peninsular IndiaThis year, Monsoon over Peninsular India was predicted below normal. Till now, almost five out of ten districts have been observing rainfall deficiency. However, the rest of the areas in Peninsular India have been receiving normal rainfall. According to the data available with Skymet, Coastal Andhra Pradesh is observing a rainfall surplus of 13 per cent.

But, during the last three days areas including Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Telangana and Karnataka have been observing good Monsoon rains. Due to this spell, the combined rainfall deficit has dropped from 22 per cent to 20 per cent as on Aug 12.

During the last 48 hours, Coastal Andhra Pradesh has received very good rains. This rainfall is attributed to a low pressure area which had developed over the North Coast of Andhra Pradesh. On Aug 11, Andhra Pradesh received 44 per cent excess rainfall. Also, on Aug 12, the region observed an excess of 173 per cent.

Similarly, Telangana received rainfall above by 64 per cent than normal on Aug 11, and 133 per cent above normal on Aug 12. Kerala observed a rainfall surplus of 49 per cent and 64 per cent on Aug 11 and 12, respectively. Also, Coastal Karnataka recorded 24 per cent excess rain on Aug 10, and 26 per cent on Aug 12.

Now, as the low pressure area has moved towards Central India, the rainfall activity will reduce over Coastal Andhra Pradesh but continue over Telangana for another 24 hours. Other parts of Peninsular India will now receive subdued rainfall activity as the concentration of moisture along with the low pressure area will be over South Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Gujarat and Rajasthan.

A fresh Monsoon surge is expected in Peninsular India from Aug 17 onwards. During this period, South interior Karnataka, Rayalaseema along with interior parts of Kerala and adjoining Tamil Nadu will receive good rain. This spell will further bring down the rainfall deficiency. Coastal Andhra Pradesh is expected to receive on and off rain during the next 4 to 5 days.  This means that Monsoon conditions in Coastal AP will remain normal and may even become excess in the next few days.
