Rainfall in East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar had been deficient almost throughout the months of June and July. Very few spells of heavy rain had been observed in the region during this period. However, light to moderate intensity rains kept lashing the sub-divisions at regular intervals, which did not let dry spells of weather to last long.
This is why there was timely sowing of crops in both Bihar and East Uttar Pradesh. And the farming sector despite less rains is still not feeling the pinch.
However, in the last 24 hours the rainfall situation has improved in both the regions. For instance, the seasonal deficiency (from June 1 to August 10) in Bihar which was at 34% came down to 31% on August 11. This is because good amounts of rain were recorded at several places.
According to the rainfall data available with Skymet, Motihari in East Champaran district of Bihar recorded 63.2 mm of rain in a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday. Chapara received 45 mm of rain while Supaul and Patna observed 33 mm and 19 mm of rain, respectively.
In a single day (August 11) Bihar recorded 24.1 mm of rain against the daily average of 10.2 mm, which is 134% excess.
Similarly, East Uttar Pradesh saw the seasonal deficiency (from June 1 to August 10) come down to 34% from 37%. According to rainfall data available with Skymet, Banda witnessed 84 mm of rain in a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday. Deoria and Gorakhpur recorded 38 mm and 36 mm of rain, respectively. Bahraich also recorded 27.4 mm of rain. This helped East UP to record 22.3 mm of rain on August 11, against the daily normal of 10.2 mm, which is 119% excess.
Meanwhile, there are chances of light scattered rain in both the regions for next 48 hours. Thereafter the low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal will move inland and give rain over the central and southern parts of the country. And as the system will weaken the Monsoon trough will move upwards due to which good amounts of rain will be observed in the region between August 16 and August 18, particularly along the foothills
