Updated on September 13, 2015: Since last 2 to 3 days, good rains have been lashing Mumbai. Pleasant weather conditions have been prevailing in the city. Maximum temperature has been settling in the low 30s while minimums have been recording in the low 20s. In the last 24 hours, the city received 17 mm of rain.
A cyclonic circulation is hovering above northwest Arabian Sea and will continue to give moderate rains over Mumbai and adjoining areas for another 48 hours. A couple of isolated heavy rain showers are also expected in the region. Thereafter, rain over Mumbai is expected to reduce significantly.
Updated on September 11, 2015: As reiterated by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, Mumbai has finally received some good rain after a dry spell of almost ten days. In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, Mumbai has recorded 32 mm of rain. Though this is not very good compared to Mumbai standards, it has come as a huge relief to the city that observes 312 mm of average rain in September.
July and August have already proved to be deficient. And going by how the weather has turned out in September so far, the picture doesn't looks very good either.
However, light to moderate rain is expected to continue in the city for next 2 to 3 days. Again after a gap of 4-5 days Mumbai is likely to receive some good rains.
Updated on September 9, 2015: Good rain expected in Mumbai soon
The month of September, just like August is turning out to be dry for Mumbai. In the last five days the city has hardly seen any rain. According to the rainfall data available with Skymet, there has only been 8.9 mm of rain in the city so far. The average rainfall for the month in Mumbai is a whopping 312.3 mm.
But now, weather activity in terms of good rainfall is going to pick up pace in next 24 hours. Though these rains will not be very heavy, it will certainly come as a welcome relief for Mumbaikars facing dry weather conditions.
A trough extending from Madhya Maharashtra upto Lakshadweep region will be vital in giving these rains to Mumbai. An off-shore trough is also expected to form in South Gujarat and extend upto Karnataka during this period, enhancing rainfall activity over the city.
June was a good month for Mumbai as record breaking rain was observed during this month. Heavy to very heavy rain was observed in the city between June 16 and June 23, which brought life to a standstill. This spell of rain was due to a deep depression formed over Northeast Arabian Sea off Maharashtra coast.
Another heavy spell of rain in Mumbai was observed on July 21. Thereafter only scattered rain has been witnessed. In the month of August Mumbai received a paltry 154.1 mm of rain against the monthly average of 529.7 mm. This was the lowest amount of rain recorded in the month of August in last ten years.
And looking at the weather models at Skymet, rainfall in September is also likely to follow the August trend.
