Kolkata is all set to welcome first spell of pre-Monsoon showers in May. As reiterated by Skymet Weather, we can expect fairly widespread moderate to good rain and thundershowers along with thunderstorms over the city between May 3 and 5.
The intensity of rain and thundershowers are likely to peak on May 4.
The approaching weather activity can be attributed to the development of a cyclonic circulation over Bihar, West Bengal and adjoining Jharkhand. A trough is also running from this system up to North Coastal Andhra Pradesh. The system is likely to sustain its strength for next two days and so will the rains.
The three-day prolonged wet spell will usher in huge relief from hot and sultry weather conditions. For past several days, people of the city has been bearing the brunt of abnormally high day temperatures over the city, sometimes amounting to heatwave conditions also.
On Monday also Kolkata recorded day maximum at 38.6°C which was four degrees above average. While, night temperature settled at 28.7°C, three degrees above average. Kolkata was mainly dry in the month of April and with clear sky, temperatures continued to settle above average for most days of the month.
According to weathermen at Skymet Weather, the cloud cover and moist southerly winds will keep the temperatures under check for the next 2-3 days. However, this will increase the levels of humidity which will be around 80%-90% in morning that will reduce to 40%-50% in afternoon hours.
Days will be slightly hot but evenings and nights will be fairly pleasant.
