Pre-Monsoon rains have once again increased over Kerala, with light to moderate rain and thundershowers lashing the region once again.
In span of last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday, Kochi recorded extremely heavy rainfall to the tune of 119 mm. This was followed by Karipur 22 mm, Kozhikode 16 mm, Punalur 13 mm, Udhagamandalam 10 mm, Alapuzha 4 mm, and Thiruvananthapuram 1 mm.

According to Skymet Weather, these rains can be attributed to the trough running from North Maharashtra up to Kerala. The trough has been attracting humid northwesterly winds from Arabian Sea, which has led to rain and thunder showers over most parts of Kerala.
Further, weathermen predict that trough is likely to persist over the region for the next 24-48 hours. In wake of this, moderate to heavy rains will continue over Kerala for the next 2-3 days.
Kerala has remained parched for quite long. Though on and off pre-Monsoon rains have been recorded over the parts of the state but the intensity has been very less.
Usually, the state starts pouring by this time but this year, rains have remained far and few. Blame it all on the absence of any significant weather system from the region.
