Rain in Northeast India

At present, there are two regions that have been recording on and off pre-Monsoon rains and Northeast India is one of the two regions. Although, the months of March and April recorded below average rains, but May began on an extremely good note. Until now, the northeastern states have witnessed fairly widespread pre Monsoon activities.

As per Skymet Weather, the regions adjacent to Bangladesh recorded more rains than the other areas. Meghalaya, lower Assam, and Tripura were the dominant states. Meanwhile, Arunachal Pradesh, upper Assam, Nagaland, and Manipur observed fewer rains than the others.

In the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, Guwahati recorded 35 mm of rains, followed by Cooch Behar at 25 mm, Silchar 24 mm, Dhubri 22 mm and Pasighat 13 mm of rains.

These rains have been due to the combination of many weather systems persisting across the regions. The first system is the cyclonic circulation which is prevailing over Sub Himalayan West Bengal and adjoining regions. The other system is a trough which is extending across West Bengal up to Manipur. Moreover, southerly humid winds from Bay of Bengal are also feeding moisture over Northeast India which is resulting in good pre Monsoon activities over Northeast India.

As per weathermen, these pre Monsoon showers along with squally winds are likely to continue over Northeast India in varied intensity. Lower parts of Assam and Meghalaya will observe the maximum amount of rains. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura will also observe light to moderate pre Monsoon showers with few heavy spells. Arunachal Pradesh and North Assam will record lesser amount of rainfall.

In view of the rains, the weather is expected to remain comfortable across the plains of Northeast India as the maximum temperatures would settle in higher 20’s and the minimums would settle in lower 20’s. Meanwhile, the weather across the hilly regions would be very pleasant.

Around May 12 or 13, the intensity of showers is expected to reduce. However, it will not go completely dry.
