July 29, 2016 2:36 PM | Skymet Weather Team

The northern region of the country has been receiving good rains during past 48 hours. Heavy showers have been witnessed over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, North Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

Rain intensity over western parts of Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and adjoining North Rajasthan was also strong.

At present, Uttar Pradesh is the only state whose rainfall is witnessing a surplus. This region is observing 7 percent rain surplus whereas Haryana and Delhi are currently witnessing a rain deficiency. Haryana rains are at present 17 percent lesser than their normal whereas Delhi has observed 11 percent lesser rains than its normal.

In a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Thursday, most parts have observed good showers which are depicted in the table given below:

Currently, the axis of Monsoon trough is passing through Rajasthan, southern parts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. A cyclonic circulation has also developed over Haryana and adjoining areas. This axis of Monsoon trough is likely to move towards north passing near Delhi.

A Western Disturbance is also seen over North Jammu & Kashmir which is likely to move in easterly direction. Due to combined effect of all these weather systems, it can be expected that rainfall will continue over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi including west Uttar Pradesh for next 48 hours.

Intensity of rain might also vary between light and moderate along with a few parts that may get heavy showers as well.

Eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh particularly foothills may also receive good rainfall for another 2 days. After August 2, it can be expected that Monsoon trough will again shift towards south leading to decreased rain activities over entire northern plains.
