The state of Tamil Nadu has witnessed very good rains during this Southwest Monsoon season. It is an unusual phenomenon for the state as it comes under the rain shadow area. Light to moderate Monsoon rains were observed over North Coastal Tamil Nadu and scattered light rains over witnessed over the interior parts of the state during the last 24 hours.

In a span of 24 hours from 8.30 am on Monday, Nungambakkam Observatory in Chennai witnessed moderate intensity rain to the tune of 25.8 mm and Menambakkam recorded 11 mm of rain.
In the same span of time, Thanjavur recorded light rain to the tune of 11 mm, Karaikal 2 mm, Kanyakumari 1.8 mm, Tiruttani 1 mm, Coonoor 0.5 mm and Coimbatore 0.3 mm of rains. As per Skymet Weather, most parts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai will witness dry weather conditions.

The mercury levels will once again rise and very warm weather conditions will persist over the region. At present, there is no significant weather system over the Southern Peninsula and therefore dry weather will prevail over the state. As on September 18, Tamil Nadu is rain surplus by 40 percent which makes it one of the most rain surplus states during the Southwest Monsoon season. The state capital Chennai is also rain surplus by 10 percent.
