Good Monsoon rains to continue over Northeast India

June 3, 2017 6:29 PM |

Cyclone Mora brings Southwest Monsoon over Northeast India

Monsoon has made a timely onset on the parts of northeastern states and we still expect good rains to continue over many parts of Northeast India for the next 24 to 48 hours. In the last 24 hours, moderate to heavy showers had lashed East Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh.

Monsoon has already reached Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and parts of Arunachal Pradesh. We expect Monsoon to advance further and cover the entire region of Northeast India in the next few days.

However, these rains are likely to subside thereafter. After 48 hours, a trough is extending from North Uttar Pradesh up to Bangladesh. Due to the change in wind pattern, humid winds from the Bay of Bengal which is increasing moisture will reduce and hence, rains will decrease marginally over the entire Northeast India.

As per Skymet Weathermen, the decrease in the amount of rainfall will be effective in the next 48 hours from the Northeastern states. But moderate rain and thundershower activities may continue to occur over Meghalaya and West Assam during the next 24 to 48 hours.

During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday, North Lakhimpur recorded 118 mm of rainfall, Pasighat 99 mm, Silchar 90 mm, Dibrugarh 51 mm, Haflong 45 mm, Gangtok 24 mm, Rangia 21 mm, Dhubri 20 mm, Goalpara 16 mm, Imphal 15 mm, Gauhati 15 mm, Tangla 13 mm, Siliguri 9 mm and Golaghat 4 mm.

After June 3, we expect a marginal decrease in rains over northeastern states but the weather will not go completely dry.
