Incessant rains do provide some relief to Kolkata but they are short lived. At present, the weather over the region is comfortable. This comfortable weather can be attributed to the weather system brewing over northwest Bay of Bengal.
The weather system started off as a cyclonic circulation over northwest Bay of Bengal which later induced in a low-pressure area. This system gradually modified into a well-marked low pressure area soon enough. And at present the weather system is seen as a depression over northwest Bay of Bengal, off Odisha and West Bengal coast.
So due to this rapid change in the intensity of the weather system, we expect good rains to occur over entire Gangetic West Bengal including Kolkata for next 24 hours. Thereafter, the weather system is expected to intensify further and move in a west-northwest direction.
The intensity of rain will increase over Odisha and Jharkhand and decrease over Gangetic West Bengal. Temperatures are also expected to reduce marginally over Kolkata and comfortable weather condition is expected to prevail over the city for next 24 to 48 hours.
During last 24 hours, 12 mm of rain was witnessed over Alipore observatory in Kolkata. Moderate showers with isolated one or two heavy spells may occur within next 24-48 hours.
