Ever since the start of September the weather of Chennai remained dry. And we expect that the weather will remain dry for the next 48 hours. But then a cyclonic circulation is expected to develop over Southwest Bay of Bengal. This weather system is likely to induce scattered rain activity over South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and North Tamil Nadu coast including Chennai.
So around that time we can expect moderate rains to happen sometime around September 11-13 over Chennai. Though intensity is expected to be on milder side and no heavy to extremely heavy but fairly good showers will occur over many parts of the city.
At present, Tamil Nadu is the second best rainfall performing state in south Peninsular India after Andhra Pradesh. The state is at present rainfall surplus with 3%.
Although the major amount of rain is received by Chennai during Northeast Monsoon, but during Southwest Monsoon the city has received plentiful of rains.
At present for the Monsoon season starting from June 1, 2016 till September 07, 2016 Chennai has received 277.8 mm of rains against the normal rainfall of 343.8 mm of rains. This means that the city is still 19% rainfall deficient from the usual Monsoon rains.
These rains may help the city to reach closer to the normal but to reach the positive figures, some heavy spell of rain is required.
