September has begun on a rainy note for Tamil Nadu, with state recording on and off Monsoon rains for the last few days. In fact, the state capital of Chennai has already received more than half of this monthly average rainfall in span of a day only.

The city has recorded on 76.2 mm of rain a day before against its monthly mean of 137 mm of rain.

Further, weather conditions are conducive for more good Monsoon rains over several parts of the state, particularly North Coastal Tamil Nadu including Chennai.

According to Skymet Weather, at present, several Monsoon systems are affecting the weather over the southern state. A fresh cyclonic circulation has developed in North Bay of Bengal and a feeble trough is extending from that system up to North Tamil Nadu.

Besides, another cyclonic circulation is seen over Lakshadweep and Maldives areas. Both the systems coupled together will give moderate rains with few heavy spells over the state, especially over Chennai. The rainy spell is likely to continue for at least 48 hours.

Increase in rain activity over the last few days has resulted in increase in cumulative rainfall for the state. The state which was deficit by 5% in the last week of August is now surplus by 7% as on September 2.
