The state of Gujarat is vulnerable to variability of Monsoon rains both in terms of hefty showers as well as deficit rainfall amounts. This time, Monsoon reached quite late over the state as compared to it usual time. Moreover, by the end of the month of June, Gujarat was rain deficient by a whopping 34 percent while Saurashtra and Kutch observed the rainfall deficiency at a massive 86 percent.

However, there were a few systems which had formed in the Bay of Bengal moving across central parts of the country thereafter going towards the Gujarat region. The cyclonic circulation present over South Gujarat in the mid tropospheric levels, also had a part to play in bringing rains over the region. In fact, the off shore along the West Coast was running from South Gujarat up to Kerala.

Thus, all these systems have together resulted in improvement in deficient rains. Until July 17, rainfall deficiency in Kutch and Gujarat reduced to 14 percent while Gujarat recorded rains at 9 percent above the normal levels.

Despite good rains over Gujarat, the Kutch region was left untouched and had remained dry for quite a long time. Cities of Bhuj, and Naliya recorded rains in single digit in total until July 17. However, during the last 24 hours, Bhuj recorded a good 21 mm of rains while Naliya saw 20 mm of rainfall.

Monsoon rains over the Kutch region remains scanty and Monsoon is the only time when the region witnesses rainfall activity. Rains remain limited as Monsoon reaches late and withdraws at the earliest.

Bhuj records three digit rains only in July. In fact, for eight long months, rains remain below 5 mm each month in Bhuj. In the coming days, scattered light rainfall activities are expected over the Kutch region and rains will not remain very heavy.
