Monsoon rains in East India, particularly in Bihar and West Bengal had not been good so far. According to the data available with Skymet, rainfall in Bihar was deficient by 70% till a few days back. While rainfall in West Bengal was short by 40%. However some good amounts of rain from June 21 has pulled down the deficit in West Bengal to 13% and to 57% in Bihar.
In a span of 24 hours from 8.30 am on Friday, Sriniketan has received a whopping 120.7 mm of rain, which is the highest 24 hour rainfall recorded in June in last 10 years. Other places in West Bengal to have recorded good showers are Coochbehar where 74.6 mm of rainfall has been recorded. Krishnanagar has recorded 54.6 mm of rain, Baharampur 49 mm, Burdwan 36.5 mm, Malda 39 mm, Jalpaiguri 25.3 mm and Kolkata 16.5 mm.
Parts of Bihar have also observed moderate amounts of rain. For instance, Bhagalpur in a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday has recorded 66.1 mm of rain, while Purnea has witnessed 22.8 mm of rain. The state capital Patna has received very light rain of 1 mm.
The rainfall in the region is due to the cyclonic circulations in Bangladesh and Bihar. According to weathermen at Skymet, good amounts of rain will be observed in East India, particularly in Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal for next 24 to 48 hours. Isolated heavy showers are also expected in few pockets.
