Monsoon arrived in the country with onset over Kerala on June 5, which means it was delayed by four days from its official onset date. The progress was a little slow to start with due to the cyclone Ashobaa. But after the cyclone moved away and dissipated, Monsoon advanced at a good pace.

From the first week of June till the middle of the week, Monsoon kept changing pace with rainfall amounts varying from region to region. For instance, rainfall in Northwest India began on a positive note with the region observing surplus of 10% during the first week. Central India on the other hand, was deficient by a whopping 30% during the same period.

By the middle of the month the rainfall figures changed. Central India recorded rainfall surplus of 18%, from June 1 to June 15. While Northwest India was deficient by 5% during this period.

Peninsular India also saw rainfall deficiency of 5% in the first week, but by the middle of the month rainfall amounts became normal in the region.

The region of East and Northeast India was highly surplus to start with. However, by the middle of the month the rainfall amounts dropped marginally due to less rains in East India, particularly Bihar and East Uttar Pradesh. Northeast India has been receiving very good amounts of rain since onset of Monsoon over the region.

Currently, the rainfall figures across the country are different. From June 1 to June 25 Central India is surplus by 55%, while Northwest India is surplus by 27%. Rainfall in Peninsular India is also surplus by 30%.

So far in the month of June, 88% of the area of the country has observed normal or excess rain.
