Gadag surpasses monthly average rainfall

August 18, 2015 4:22 PM |

Gadag RainNorth Interior Karnataka has not seen good rains this Monsoon season. In fact it is one of the most deficient pocket in Peninsular India. The rainfall deficiency in the region from the period June 1 to August 17 stood at a whopping 45%.

However, there have been one or two places where good rain has been recorded. For instance Gadag in a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday has witnessed 76 mm of rain, which is the second highest rainfall figure recorded in last ten years. The previous highest was 93 mm, observed on August 20, 2010.

So far in the month of August, Gadag has recorded 105 mm of rain, which is more than the monthly average of 87.2 mm. Rainfall averages in North Interior Karnataka are itself low, therefore a single spell of heavy rain can easily help the place surpass its monthly normal.

The cyclonic circulation over extreme southern parts of Tamil Nadu and the Arabian Sea caused the trough to extend northward and give good rain over Gadag. Now the trough is shifting southwards and is expected to give good amounts of rain along the West Coast. Meanwhile, Gadag will continue to observe light rain for next 24 to 48 hours.
