Updated on October 16, 2015, 11:30 AM (IST): Fresh Western Disturbance approaching hills of North India

The hills of North India have been receiving good showers for the past two days. These rains have been attributed to the Western Disturbance, which was affecting the hilly states. But, with the system moving away, the intensity of rainfall has decreased.

However, a fresh Western Disturbance is presently hovering over Afghanistan and is expected to move in a north-easterly direction. The system will give rain over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and some parts of Punjab from October 18 onwards.

The intensity of rain will increase on October 19. Many parts of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir will receive light to moderate rain, while one or two places may observe heavy showers. Also, snowfall is expected in the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Around October 19, a few areas in Uttarakhand will also receive light to moderate rain.

Western Disturbances (WD) originate from the Mediterranean Sea, and travel from west to east direction. WDs move across Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. When they encounter the Western Himalayas, these systems cause snowfall over the hilly regions of North India.

Between October and February, the frequency of these Western Disturbances increase over North India. On an average, around four to five WDs affect India in one month. These winter rains are quite beneficial for the Rabi crops in North India, particularly wheat.
