Fresh Western Disturbance to bring rain in Delhi, North India

January 14, 2014 1:34 PM |

Respite from the biting cold conditions for Delhiites on Lohri and Makar Sankranti seems temporary as the minimum temperature is expected to come down in the next two days.

The Western Disturbance as an upper air circulation over Jammu & Kashmir and neighbouring areas has brought in widespread but light rain and snow in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir. In view of this weather system, night temperatures have been above normal in Delhi and North India. Minimum in the national capital rose from 6.3°C on Sunday to 7°C the next day. Today morning, Delhi recorded a low of 8.2°C at the Safdarjung observatory while, the maximum was near normal around 21°C. Similarly, in Amritsar the minimum rose to 3.6°C on Monday from 0.4°C the day before. Today, the night temperature recorded in the city of ‘the Golden Temple’ was 3.9°C. After the passage of the system, minimums will show a falling trend by a couple of degrees but maximums will remain near normal.

Weather in Delhi and northwest plains is pleasant at the moment just when the people are celebrating Makar Sankranti, to mark a good winter harvest and to bid farewell to the biting cold weather in North India. However, a fresh Western Disturbance (WD) approaching North India will bring another spell of winter chill. The system would be more prominent over the plains and cause clouding associated with rain in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar, from the 17th night. Some rain and snow is also likely in the higher reaches of Jammu & Kashmir.
