A fresh Western Disturbance is approaching the hills of Jammu and Kashmir. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the System is expected to start affecting the region by April 30. The Western Disturbance will last for almost three days and give rain in most parts of Jammu and Kashmir, parts of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and plains of North India, including Delhi-NCR.
As forecast by Skymet, a Western Disturbance that approached Jammu and Kashmir on April 27 has given some good amounts of rain in the region and cleared thereafter. According to the rainfall data available with Skymet, Gulmarg received 28 mm of rain in 24 hours from 8.30 am on Monday. The state capital Srinagar observed 20.2 mm of rain, while Pahalgam and Kokernag received 24 mm and 21 mm of rain, respectively. Uttarkashi and Nainital in Uttarakhand also experienced 21 mm and 2 mm of rain respectively.
The system has now cleared and a marginal rise in day temperature is expected till Wednesday before a fresh WD approaches the region and gives good amounts of rain. Currently the maximums are settling way below normal. For instance the day temperature in Srinagar settled at 12.7°C on Monday, which is 10 degrees below normal. Pahalgam saw the maximum record 11 degrees below the monthly normal. Katra, which is at a lower altitude saw the day temperature settle at 28°C, which is 4 degrees below normal.
Western Disturbances usually tend to move more northwards and become less frequent during this time, largely being confined to the higher reaches. But unusual pattern of WDs is being observed this time. These weather systems are still occurring at regular intervals and giving rain, not only in the hills but plains as well. This is why we are observing cooler weather conditions in parts of North India at this point of time.
