Five districts in Assam are once again reeling under the fresh wave of floods that was triggered due to the incessant downpours over the state for past couple of days. Over 66,000 individuals have been affected reportedly .
The recent floods had claimed 76 lives across the state, taking this year’s flood death toll to 160.
The worst affected districts are Goalpara, Dhemaji, South Salmara, North Lakhimpur and Karbi Anglong where several villages have been swamped by these torrential showers.
In a span of last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, North Lakhimpur recorded heavy rainfall of 90 mm, followed by Dhubri 15 mm, Goalpara 10.5 mm, Jorhat 4 mm, Dibrugarh 3 mm, Lumding 1.4 mm and Guwahati, Tinsukia and Tezpur at 1 mm.

These weather conditions can be attributed to a cyclonic circulation which has been prevailing over East Assam and adjoining areas. Due to this, southwesterly winds from Bay of Bengal have been infusing moisture over the region. Hence, heavy to very heavy rains and thundershowers have been lashing many parts of Assam and adjoining areas.
Places such as North Lakhimpur, Hojai, Dibrugarh and Goalpara have been worst flood-hit districts.
Further, it is anticipated that these rains are expected to reduce progressively over most parts of Assam and adjoining areas within the span of next four to five days. However, a few spells of scattered rains and thundershowers cannot be ruled out over the state.
Accordingly, we can say that a respite from these continuous thundershowers is in offing over the entire state for at least next few days.
