Updated on December 01, 2015 at 11:30 AM (IST): Heavy to very heavy rains have returned to wreak havoc over Tamil Nadu, especially Chennai. During span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, several parts of the state recorded heavy to extremely heavy showers.
At present, fairly widespread moderate showers are going on over Chennai with overcast sky. Rains are expected to intensify vigorously and heavy to very heavy rains will pound the city during next 24 to 48 hours, resulting in flood-like situation.
According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, some parts of North Chennai will receive extremely heavy rains.
Rest parts of the states, particularly coastal parts will also continue with torrential Monsoon rains.
Updated on November 30, 2015 at 11:00 AM (IST): Heavy widespread rain has occurred over many places of Tamil Nadu in last 24 hours. Due to the presence of a low-pressure area, Tamil Nadu rains will continue to lash several coastal parts for next 24 hours. The rain woes that have kept the residents engulfed since past weeks seems to linger for few more days.
Updated on November 29, 2015 at 11:20 AM (IST): The trough of low over south-west Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka is extending up to 3.6 km. The system is likely to move in a west-north-west direction and will result in moderate rainfall over various parts of Tamil Nadu.
The coastal parts of Tamil Nadu are likely to witness enhanced rainfall activity. Some areas in the state may receive heavy rainfall as well. Interior parts of Tamil Nadu may witness light rainfall. These rains are likely to continue for another 48 to 72 hours.
However, in the last 48 hours, very little rain has occurred over Tamil Nadu, which is a huge relief from the deluge being witnessed by the state. This weather condition can be attributed to the dry north-easterly winds, which are cutting off the moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal. Also, easterly waves have been weak leading to a significant decrease in rainfall activity and cloud cover.
Almost dry weather conditions will continue for another 48 hours due to which flood waters will recede from various parts of the state. Also, rescue operations will undergo smoothly under dry weather conditions.
Fresh Spell of Rain Expected
However, on the darker side, a fresh cyclonic circulation, which is over South Andaman Sea will induce a low-pressure area. This system will move in a west-north-west direction towards the Sri Lanka coast.
By 28th evening, heavy rain will commence over the southern parts of Tamil Nadu. The rainfall activity will gradually spread over other coastal areas including the state capital, Chennai and its adjoining areas. By November 29, heavy to very heavy rain is expected over most parts of Coastal Tamil Nadu. During this period, Interior Tamil Nadu will continue to receive light to moderate rainfall activity.
Thereafter, another cyclonic circulation is likely to emerge over the same area but it will move towards the Andhra Coast and give rain over Andhra Pradesh by December 2.
