An active western disturbance is approaching Western Himalayas anytime soon. Ahead of the weather system, clouding has reached forward areas of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. By tonight, the spread and depth of clouds will increase and cover most parts of the states. The weather system will move across the mountains of North India between 10th and 13th January.
Western disturbance will have induced circulation over the northern plains. The dual system will compliment each other and enhance the spread and intensity of wintry weather across the mountainous resorts of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Elevated places above 6000' are likely to have snowfall in Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal. Mountains above 10,000' in Uttrakhand will witness snow on 11th & 12th Jan.
Tourist resorts of Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Patnitop, Srinagar, Qazi Gund and Banihal will observe moderate to heavy snowfall. Similar activity is expected over Manali, Shimla, Spiti, Dalhousie, Rohtang and Keylong. Wide spread rain and thundershowers are likely in the lower reaches of both these states. Jammu, Udhampur, Katra, Dharamshala, Kangra, Chamba, Khajjiar and Kullu are expected to have rain and thundershowers, with chances of hailstorm at few places.
In Uttrakhand, the higher reaches like Badrinath, Kedarnath, Auli and Hemkund Sahib will witness moderate snowfall and the lowers hills and foothills like Rishikesh, Haridwar, Dehradun, Haldwani, Mussorie, Nainital, Joshimath and Champawat will observe intense rain and thundershowers.
The remnants of the weather system may have light and isolated activity on 14th Jan 2023. Otherwise, broad clearance in the weather conditions is expected between 14th and 17th Jan 2023. Another western disturbance, albeit relatively mild , will follow, affecting the mountains from 18th Jan onward.
