Fresh snowfall in Jammu & Kashmir likely 2nd February onwards

January 31, 2014 2:07 PM |

A period of fresh snow and rain is expected to be witnessed in Jammu & Kashmir between 2nd and 6th of February. According to our meteorologists, snowfall will start on 2nd of February with heavy amounts expected on the 3rd and 5th  of February. In between, light snowfall and rain will be observed.

Snowfall is expected to occur at most of the places during these days and may lead to national highway number one - linking Kashmir valley to Jammu - being cut off.

The weather system (a Western Disturbance) responsible for the climate in Jammu & Kashmir is still at a distance lying over Afghanistan and adjoining areas of North Pakistan. It would move eastwards to reach over Jammu & Kashmir in the next 24 hours.

Western Disturbance is a low pressure area emerging in the Mediterranean Sea and adjoining Atlantic Ocean from where it moves eastward to reach over the Western Himalayan region after travelling across middle-east, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Jammu & Kashmir has experienced 12 per cent more snow and rain than normal during the week from 23rd to 26th January. The state witnessed 32.9 mm of rain and snow compared to the normal of 29.4 mm.

Overall the state has received 14 per cent more snow and rain than the normal between 1st to 29th of January. It received a little over 102 mm of snow and rain compared to the average of 89.2 mm during the period.

But during the same period, winter snow and rain have been short by -26 and -3 per cent respectively in the other two Himalayan states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Lesser number of strong Western Disturbances is the reason behind this shortfall in snow and rain.
