Fresh rain and snow was observed at many places over Jammu and Kashmir and at a few places over Himachal Pradesh during the last 24 hours. Also, isolated places over Uttarakhand received some light rains and snow. These activities occurred in the presence of a fresh Western Disturbance over North Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir.
Similar weather is likely to continue over Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh in the next 24 to 48 hours as well. Mainly light rains with isolated moderate spells are likely over these areas. Plain regions in these states will also receive light rain and thundershower activities.
Some major tourist places like Shimla, Manali, Kullu, Srinagar, Kashmir, Gulmarg and Sonmarg will continue to see fresh snowfall for the next 48 hours. In the view of this activity, the possibility of avalanches and major road blockages cannot be ruled out over the area.
Also, very cold conditions are likely to prevail over the hills for consecutive days ahead. Temperatures are likely to remain very low. Already sub-zero temperatures are being recorded at multiple places in the hilly states.
As soon as the Western Disturbance moves away probably by December 22, there is going to be a gap of almost a week before a fresh Western Disturbance approaches the region.
This will bring in some relief for the locals along with some sunshine.
