Southwest Monsoon has been active over Odisha on several occasions this Monsoon season. Most of the Monsoon systems developing in the Bay of Bengal have brought good rains over the state.

On Monday as well, Odisha witnessed a rainy day. Widespread good rains occurred over the region. During last 24 hours, Puri received 55 mm of rainfall, Sambalpur received 32 mm, Jharsuguda 17 mm, Keonjhargarh and Bhubaneswar 11 mm each, Balasore 3 and Chandabali 2 mm of rainfall. Gopalpur in the coastal areas also received 5 mm of rainfall.

The ongoing spell of rainfall in Odisha could be attributed to a fresh Monsoon system in the bay of Bengal. Initially the system appeared as a cyclonic circulation in North Bay. It gradually intensified into a low pressure area and could further strengthen into a well-marked low pressure area.

This weather system over North Bay of Bengal will enhance rains over East India along with Odisha. Good Monsoon rains will continue over Odisha during next 24 to 48 hours. We expect good Monsoon rains over Gangetic West Bengal, East Uttar Pradesh, North and East Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand as well over the next 2 days.

So far Odisha has received 11% less rainfall than what it should have normally received. Nevertheless, the state is still lying in the category of normal Monsoon rains as of now.
