Southwest Monsoon has been active over lower parts of Assam for the last few days. It has brought heavy showers over many places in the region, particularly the valley area.
This spell of rain could be attributed to the weather system over the Bay of Bengal which is at present lying in very close proximity to the coast and is expected to move inland very soon. Moisture laden southerly winds are reaching up toAssam, bringing heavy rains.
Normally, as any system in the Bay of Bengal approaches the coastal areas, the rainfall intensity increases. Thus, scattered heavy showers are being observed over Northeast India. At present, the weather system in the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic circulation and is expected to revive the Monsoon surge. As have been reiterated by Skymet, we cannot rule out flood-like situation in many districts of Assam as the Brahmaputra River and its tributaries start overflowing.

TheNorthern Limit of Monsoon (NLM)is now passing through Latitude 15°N/ Longitude 60°E, Latitude 15°N/ Longitude 70°E, Karwar, Gadag, Ongole, Latitude 16°N / Longitude 85°E, Latitude 20°N / Longitude 90°E, Latitude 22°N / Longitude 90°E andGangtok.
Conditions are favourable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon into remaining parts of Bay of Bengal and some parts of Odisha, GangeticWest Bengal, Jharkhand andBiharduring next couple of days.
