In the past 24 hours, that is from 0830 hours IST of yesterday to 0830 hours IST of today, scattered light to moderate rains with one or two heavy spells have been recorded. For instance, Koraput and Jharsuguda recorded 44.6 mm and 23.4 mm of rains respectively.

Presently, the Low-Pressure Area is over the interior parts of Odisha which will move in northwest direction and after 24 hours, these rains are expected to reduce. However, soon after that is around September 1, another Low-Pressure Area is expected to develop over the North Bay of Bengal.

This new and powerful system will impact Odisha September 2 onward. And, the rain activities are expected here until September 4. Initially, the southern districts of the state will witness good rains. Places like Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Angul, Ganjam, Rayagada, Deogarh and Kandhamal will witness these rain activities.

Post-September 4, the rains will continue although the intensity is likely to take a dip. These intermittent light to moderate rain and thundershowers with few heavy spells will be a sight until September 7 or 8. The good news is that these rains will not give rise to any flood-like situation.

Presently, Odisha is rain deficit by four percent but falls under the normal category (+/- 19%, being the normal value). With the upcoming rains, there is a chance that the state might become surplus by the first week of September.
