Night temperatures in most places in Kashmir valley have plummeted to below zero degrees. Capital Srinagar recorded -2.4 degrees which is three degrees below normal for the month of December. Leh continued to remain under freezing point with a minimum temperature of -9 degrees.
Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Qazigund also recorded -4.5, -2 and -2.4 degrees respectively as the minimum temperature on Tuesday morning. Banihal too recorded minimum temperature of -0.3 degrees on Tuesday.
Plains in the state have been witnessing below normal night temperatures in the last 24 hours. Winter capital Jammu recorded 9.2 degrees as the minimum temperature on Tuesday morning which is close to the December average of 9 degrees.
A feeble Western Disturbance that lies over Jammu & Kashmir and adjoining north Pakistan is expected to give isolated snow or rain in the hills during the next 24 hours. But the region will become drier and cooler once the weather system passes.
With this, night temperatures in the state may fall further and continue to remain below zero degrees in the hills. The state is yet to witness a strong Western Disturbance since the first week of November this year. Snowfall and rain associated with Western Disturbance is the main reason for cold conditions not only in the state but for entire Northwest, Central and East India.
