Forest fires wreak havoc over Uttarakhand

April 29, 2016 5:00 PM |

Forest fires wreak havoc over UttarakhandUttarakhand forest fires have been wreaking havoc over the entire region. Hot and dry conditions with very little rain have sparked a blazing forest fire in the state of Uttarakhand.

Pre-Monsoon showers have practically remained absent in the region leading to a drought-like situation over the hilly state of North India.

The Uttarakhand government has deployed an additional set of staff to get rid of the burning state. In fact, the Governor KK Paul has now decided to increase the personnel engaged from 3000 to 6000. Additionally, 500 people from the fire brigade department have been deployed to curb the raging forest fires in the state.

The families that have been affected by forest fires will be given a compensation amount. Also, departments have been asked to work in coordination to keep a watch on the ones responsible in the illegal felling of trees.

Come spring and pleasant weather conditions take over. However, during the months of April and May when temperatures go sky high and rain are absent over the region, drying of leaves take place. So much so that leaves fall and get accumulated on the ground. These conditions are vulnerable to forest fires.

Since the Western Disturbances affecting the Western Himalayas were not strong enough, good showers were only observed in Jammu and Kashmir and a few areas of Himachal Pradesh. Thus, Uttarakhand remained dry in April with very little rain in the region.
