rain in konkan

The Konkan and Goa region including Mumbai has been experiencing heavy to very heavy rains since the last four days. This heavy spell of rain has pulled down the rainfall deficiency to a great extent in the region. And the current situation hints signifies that soon this region would become surplus with rains.

In the last 24 hours, from 8:30 am on Monday, Santa Cruz (Mumbai)has recorded 375 mm of rainfall, followed by Dahanu 193 mm, Matheran 187 mm and Mahabaleshwar 184 mm.

According to our meteorologists, the well marked Low-Pressure Area, currently over Odisha, has started moving closer to Maharashtra. Thus, heavy to very heavy rains will lash the regions of Vidarbha and Marathwada during the next 48 hours. Vidarbha has already witnessed moderate showers in the last 24 hours. The heavy showers are expected to continue until July 3 overMadhya Maharashtra, wherein North Madhya Maharashtra,in particular, will get to see moderate to heavy showers on July 3 and 4.

Meanwhile, scattered rains are likely over South Madhya Maharashtra, wherein places such as Sangli, Satara, Kolhapur will observe rain and thundershower activities. Similarly, Solapur and adjoining areas in South Marathwada will record scattered showers. Moreover, these rains would be beneficial for the drought-prone areas of Vidarbha and Marathwada.

The city of Mumbai, which has been witnessing torrential rains for the last many days, will finally get to see a marginal relief on July 3. However, rains will once again pick up pace by July 4 or 5 as the Low-Pressure Area will become more prominent over the region. However, the intensity would be low as compared to the ongoing rains.

According to the data available with Skymet from June 1 to July 1, Madhya Maharashtra is rain deficient by 18% (normal category), Marathwada by 34% and Vidarbha by 40%. However, due to the upcoming spell, we expect these three meteorological divisions of Maharashtra to come under the normal rain deficiency category. Meanwhile, Konkan and Goa will get surplus with rains.
