Pleasant weather

This winter season, the northwestern plains of the country such as Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Northwest Uttar Pradesh and North Rajasthan have performed very well in terms of winter rainfall.

According to the rainfall data available with Skymet, Punjab between January 1 and February 28 was 100% rain surplus, followed by Delhi 75%, while Haryana and Chandigarh remained excess with rains under the ‘normal’ category.

According to Skymet Weather, the reason for such surplus rains over the region can be attributed to a series of Western Disturbances that kept approaching the Himalayas one after the other. The induced Cyclonic Circulations of these disturbances made the combination even stronger, thereby increasing the spread and duration of these rains over the region throughout January and February.

The approaching of different weather systems is still continuing. Currently a Western Disturbance is over the Western Himalayas, which is giving rain and snow over Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. However, this time, the system has spared most parts of Northwest India and we do not expect any rains over Delhi, Haryana, Northwest Uttar Pradesh for the next three days. In Punjab, most areas will remain dry, barring the foothills like Pathankot, which might get some light rains tomorrow. Likewise, pockets of North Rajasthan may see some rains today.

In wake of northwesterly winds, both day and night temperatures are presently below normal by 2℃ to 4℃. However, the next three days will see a marginal increase in minimums and maximums. The region will observe bright sunshine during day hours while afternoons will be pleasant.

March 10 onward, another Western Disturbance, much stronger in nature will approach the Western Himalayas. This system will induce a Cyclonic Circulation. Due to the combined effect of these systems, clouding will start over the northwestern plains of the country and light rains will occur over East and North Rajasthan on March 10. On March 11, the spread will increase and cover places like Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Northwest Uttar Pradesh. During this time, the wind pattern will also undergo a change from northwesterly to southeasterly, thereby causing minimums to significantly rise over the region.
