Fog in Delhi was reported in pockets on Thursday morning but it did not have any impact on rail, road and air traffic as the visibility remained good (above 800 meters) in most parts of the city, except Palam where it dropped to nil, i.e. below 50 meters. Fog in Delhi has not been frequent and dense this winter due to lesser number of active Western Disturbances, responsible for fog formation.
“There has only been three to four days dense fog in Delhi this winter and forecast shows that except for one or two odd pockets, there will not be any fog in Delhi, at least for the next 3-4 days. We did not anticipate a continuous flow of northerly winds from the hills, and since that happened, fog cover in Delhi remained lesser than normal”, said a meteorologist at Skymetweather.com
Fog in Delhi and North India is a common feature around Christmas and New Year but this time there wasn’t any fog, much to the delight of locals and tourists. “Fog cannot be predicted but possibilities of fog can be looked at. We were expecting fog in Delhi to make a comeback around the New Year in the wake of a Western Disturbance. However, that did not happen due to strong winds, high temperatures and rain-conditions unfvourable for fog formation”, explained another meteorologist at Skymet.
While there has not been much fog in Delhi and North India this winter, Central India has unexpectedly experienced more number of foggy days. As visibility remained good in Delhi today morning, dense fog was witnessed in entire Madhya Pradesh. Rail traffic was badly affected in Bhopal where the visibility remained nil till 8 a.m and improved only around 10 a.m to reach up to 500 meters. Jabalpur too observed overcast skies due to a dense fog cover.
Fog in Delhi will remain restricted to isolated pockets till Sunday whereas in Madhya Pradesh it could last for another 24 hours. On the other hand, dense fog being experienced in East India for the last few days has cleared due to the flow of strong northwesterly winds from the north. Fog/haze in East India could only be observed at places near the water bodies and foothills of the Himalayas.
