As the Western Disturbance moves away, North India will once again start witnessing the fog over the plains. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, no fog was being observed over the plains over last few days, as the two consecutive Western Disturbances which had been affecting North India last week, resulted in increase in moisture levels as well as significant rise in minimum temperature.
However, as the system moves away, there will be change in the wind pattern. Winds blowing from south direction will now be replaced by northerlies or north-westerlies, which will lead to decrease in minimum temperatures. As per Skymet, drop in minimums combined with high humidity levels will lead to conducive atmospheric conditions for fog over several areas of Punjab, Haryana and northwest Uttar Pradesh.
Also, farmers of Haryana and Punjab have started with the process of irrigation in the fields, which will further contribute towards increase in humidity content. Therefore, isolated parts of these neighbouring state might witness dense fog.
Meanwhile, East and Northeast states will continue to experience dense fog.
The most feared element of winter, fog, is generally a phenomenon which occurs in early morning and late evening hours. Fog in Delhi and North India is the most common feature of the winter season which leads to massive delay and cancellation of flights and trains.
Fog has not disrupted air, road or rail traffic yet as the airfields we have in India today, are well equipped. Moreover, fog is generally short-lived and arises only during sunrise. However, as we enter the month of December, fog will now grow in both space and time.
