The lowest visibility was recorded at Varanasi, Purnia, Malda and Agartala, wherein it dropped to less than 25 meters. The same way, Lucknow, Bhagalpur and Kailashahar also saw visibility less than 50 meters each.

Visibility in Ambala, Bahraich, Digha and Balasore was less than 200 meters, while Vishakhapatnam, Patna, Guwahati and Itanagar saw lowest visibility at less than 500 meters.

Reason for the low visibility across the northwestern plains of the country could be attributed to the decrease in wind speed, which is at present calm and light in nature. Prior to the change, it was of moderate intensity and blowing from north-northwest direction. These winds were obstructing the development of fog over the region.

Now, a fresh Western Disturbance has approached North Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir. In the wake of this weather system, the speed of the wind have dwindled significantly, consequently many parts of the plains of North India have observed moderate to dense fog.

Moving to the cause of foggy mornings over the foothills of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Northeast India, herein it appeared in the wake of easterly winds that are humid in nature. Additionally, winds are of low intensity over the region, thus contributing to the formation of fog over east and northeastern states.

Skymet Weather predicts fog to further increase over northwestern plains for the next 24 to 48 hours, thereafter the prevailing Western Disturbance will move away and moderate winds from the north will again recommence over the region by December 23, resulting in the reduction of fog.

The intensity of fog is expected to decrease over East and Northeast India after 24 to 48 hours.
