Fog quits most parts of India; fog-free days on fringe

Today most regions in India are observing a fog free day barring a few isolated pockets. Moreover, the visibility in National Capital of Delhi is pretty good. Seems like, the recent rains have washed away bad visibility levels with them. Since, the last two to three days there is a significant reduction in fog intensity across Indo-Gangetic Plains.

Let’s us now have a look at the Indian City Fog Index-

Delhi (1200 m)                    No Fog

Amritsar (2500 m)             No Fog

Bhubaneswar (100 m)       Dense

Patna (1500 m)                    No Fog

Lucknow (2000 m)              No Fog

However, on February 4, Delhi NCR and many parts of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh witnessed dense to very dense fog and visibility at Palam reduced to ‘Nil’ for a short duration. But since then, there was a steady decrease in fog due to increase in wind speed from Northwest. Moreover, during the last two days, rains were witnessed at many places over Northern Plains and fog has almost disappeared. Since, yesterday visibility across the major airfields and cities in the Northern plains remains good.

Today also, visibility was 1000 m or more across most of the cities right from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. We expect, moderate winds from North-west direction to continue over Northern Plains. As these winds are dry and cold, humidity will decrease, and fog will not settle down for at least next two to three days.

The three-essential para-meters for fog formation are low temperatures, high humidity and light winds. Temperatures are low already, but the other two parameters will rarely zero-down as the wind speed will be high and humidity levels will also decrease due winds from Northwest.
