Fog likely to make a comeback over Northern Plains

December 4, 2016 1:02 PM |

Fog in North India

The northern and eastern plains including Delhi-NCR were under a blanket of dense fog between November 30 and December 2. This reduced visibility across the areas very drastically.

Several flights and trains were delayed due to thick layer of fog during early morning hours.

This dense fog layer dissipated from Delhi-NCR by December 3, however many parts of Indo-Gangetic plains are still witnessing moderate to dense fog.

Since the last week of November, moderate winds from the northwest direction have been blowing over the region. During this period, these northwesterly winds are generally cool and dry in nature, leading to clear sky conditions.

With the formation of strong weather system over Bay of Bengal, the northwesterly winds were swapped by easterly and southeasterly humid winds which have led to an increase in the humidity levels.

The formation of fog requires three parameters: Those are high humidity, low minimum temperatures and light winds.

These three factors together made the situation favorable for the formation of fog around November 30, thus leading to widespread fog.

As per Skymet Weather, the fog layer will remain confined to areas of North Madhya Pradesh, central and East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

A fresh weather system is developing in Bay of Bengal, due to which easterly winds will once again reach up to Delhi. In wake of this, humidity levels will increase, minimums will dip once again and the wind speed will also become light. Therefore we can expect moderate to dense fog to make a comeback around December 7 or 8 over the states of Delhi, Haryana and Punjab.
