Fog in India post

North India is infamous for witnessing foggy morning during the winter months of December and January. Though this year, the month of December went with a lesser foggy weather, January began with a thick layer of fog enveloping most of the northwestern plains.

In the wake of foggy weather, the visibility too curtailed thereby affecting the rail, road and air traffic by delaying several trains, flights and creating traffic chaos. Moreover, foggy weather is anticipated to prevail in the region for the next 24 hours before any improvement can be expected.

Very dense fog during the early morning hours was observed at many places over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and at isolated places over Uttar Pradesh, Assam and the NMMT region (Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura). While, moderate fog appeared at isolated places over Bihar, Northwest Madhya Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Marathwada region.

Amritsar, Sri Ganganagar, and Delhi witnessed nil visibility. On the other hand, visibility remained under 50 meters in Patiala, Chandigarh, Hisar, Varanasi, Silchar, and Kailashahar.

As per the weatherman at Skymet Weather, the approach of one after the other Western Disturbances can be related to the persistent fog over the region. In the wake of this Western Disturbance, a frequent change in the wind direction is taking place.

Thus, the definite direction of the winds which is normally northwesterly during this time of the year is not able to set up. Further, the speed of these winds is also less due to which dense to very dense fog has been ruling over the northwestern plains. Due to persistent fog, the day temperatures also remained on the lower side leading to cold day conditions at many places over Punjab and Haryana and at a few places over Uttar Pradesh.

Further, in the next 24 hours, this current Western Disturbance is expected to start moving away leading to the commencement of northwesterly winds and in the next 48 hours, the speed of winds will increase leading to the decrease in the fog intensity and spread over Punjab, Haryana, West Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi and NCR. However, East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar will have to wait for some more days to witness some improvement.
