Fog becomes denser and wider in East India

Fog, a common feature during winters has largely been confined to parts of East India so far. Gorakhpur in east Uttar Pradesh has been the most affected region. In the last one week the city has been observing dense to very dense fog with visibility dropping to nil. But now foggy conditions can be seen extending up to some more parts of Bihar, West Bengal and Northeast India. North India is presently enjoying clear weather conditions and escapes fog though, during mid-November some places like Amritsar had witnessed foggy conditions for a few days.

Meanwhile, Gorakhpur again observed very dense fog, with visibility dropping to nil today. This has been a recurring phenomenon for the city for the last couple of days, which has impacted rail traffic in the region to a large extent. Trains travelling to Bihar through Gorakhpur have been running late by almost 3-4 hours.

Other place in Uttar Pradesh to have observed fog today was Allahabad, where visibility dropped to nil at 7 am. Varanasi and Lucknow too observed very dense fog with visibility dropping to 50 m early in the morning today.

In Bihar, Gaya witnessed dense fog and the visibility recorded was 200 meters. Patna also observed shallow fog with visibility recorded up to 500 meters only. No major air or rail traffic interruptions were reported from both the cities.

Agartala and Guwahati in Northeast India also observed shallow fog. Imphal, the capital of Manipur was the only place in the region to observe very dense fog, with visibility of only 100 meters. Kolkata also observed fog today though, it was shallow and visibility recorded 700 meters.

These conditions are going to prevail in East India for at least another 4-5 days.

For dense fog to occur, humidity plays a vital role. If the humidity is high and wet conditions prevail then fog becomes more frequent and dense. This is something that is not happening in North India currently, where the weather is dry and hence no fog is being observed. However, we expect the weather in North India to change in next 4-5 days.
