Floods, landslides in Imphal, parts of Manipur wreak havoc; rains to continue

Few parts of the Northeast region of India, particularly Assam has been reeling under flood conditions for quite some time now. So much so that over a lakh people have been affected and some areas continue to bear the brunt.

It seems like this Monsoon season is the time of floods for more parts of the Northeast. In fact, Imphal and other adjoining areas of Manipur after heavy showers have been witnessing flash floods. Inundation has taken place in many areas of Imphal including the shopping districts as well as government offices.

Heavy rains have been lashing the state of Manipur for the past 48 hours which have resulted in such a situation. In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Saturday, Imphal has witnessed a good 31 mm of rainfall.

Many localities of Imphal Thangmeiband, Uripok, Sagolband, and a fewmore areas are reeling under conditions of flash floods. Not only this, residents of Seijang had to empty their homes as waters entered their houses.

Flash floods also wreaked havoc over many paddy fields under Lamlai and Lamsang constituency in Imphal. Not only this, water levels of several Rivers including the Imphal River, Nambul River Kongba River as well as the Iril River are on the rise and may breach the danger mark.

Themisery doesn’t end here as landslides in three areas in Manipur have disturbed the national highway 2 traffic. While in some areas traffic has been resumed, a few parts continue to be disrupted.
As per weathermen at Skymet, rains of moderate to heavy intensity will continue which will result in further chaos over the state.
