Floods in Assam; Rains for Rest of Northeast

Southwest Monsoon made a timely onset over the Northeastern states. Since then it has been lashing the sister states with very heavy rains. So much so that several areas also witnessed flood like situations during the month of June.

In fact, East Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have been receiving heavy showers since last 2 days. In the last 24 hours from 8.30 am on Friday Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh witnessed 65 mm of heavy rainfall, Pasighat 54.6 mm.

Northlakhimpur in Assam received 90.4 mm of intense rains, Silchar 44.8 mm. Whereas, Cherrapunji in Meghalaya received heavy rain of 74.2 mm. These rains were due to a cyclonic circulation which was over East Assam. Now this circulation has become less marked. However, moderate to heavy rains are likely to continue for next few days.

At present more than a lakh people are affected due to the heavy rains which splashed Assam leading to floods. These floods are damaging properties of varied nature. People are not able to lead their normal lives. We expect intermittent rains of various intensities to continue. More water is likely to accumulate hence relief is not in sight for at least next three to four days.
