Floods in Assam, Mizoram wreak havoc; claim 12 lives, several missing

The torrential Monsoon showers on late Tuesday night prompted flash flooding in parts of Assam and Mizoram, particularly in Guwahati killing at least 12 and several others still missing.

Not only, this, flash floods have also eroded away close to 350 houses across Mizoram, bordering Bangladesh and Myanmar. Since last week, hundreds of thousands of people were affected by flooding in Assam and one of the worst-hit district, Karimganj was once again submerged under flooding rains.

In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Tuesday, Guwahati recorded three-digit hefty showers of 106 mm, Tezpur 92 mm, Majbat 88 mm, Dhubri 60 mm and North Lakhimpur observed 59 mm of rains.

Skymet Weather reiterates that these rains were due to the formation of a low-pressure area in the region. It was due to this weather system that the Brahmaputra and tributary rivers swelled, causing flooding. However, now this low-pressure area has weakened and persisted as a cyclonic circulation over the region.

In the wake of this, moderate rains with one or two heavy spells are likely to continue over Assam and Mizoram for the next 48 hours. This, in turn, will result in hampering the ongoing rescue and relief operations in these states. In fact, heavy rains are likely to pour over Assam today as well thus creating more misery for the people.

The other parts of Assam have also recorded extremely heavy rains that also resulted in cutting down the road connectivity of the state with the adjoining regions.
