The city of Chennai has seen light to moderate showers since the beginning of the Northeast Monsoon season and very heavy rains had yet not made an appearance over the capital city of Tamil Nadu.
In fact, in the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Saturday, Chennai has received a whopping 215 mm of rainfall, which is the second highest 24-hour rainfall during the decade. The highest ever 24-hour rain recorded has been 452.6 mm witnessed on November 25th in 1976.
Moreover, these rains have resulted in flooding conditions over the city of Chennai, accompanied with traffic chaos, flight delays, etc.
A low-pressure area is expected to form over south east Bay of Bengal which will induce which will intensify into a depression and will move towards Tamil Nadu coast. With this, we expect another spell of heavy to very heavy rain over Chennai and adjoining areas on November 10. The intensity of rain will continue to be moderate to heavy until November 11.
Therefore, we can say that Northeast monsoon will remain active over coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu including Chennai.
