Heavy rainfall occurred over Northeast India during last 2 to 3 days. Incessant rains have flooded the low-lying areas of several places in Assam.
A cyclonic circulation is persisting over Assam and Meghalaya. This weather system has enhanced rainfall activities over the region, leading to flood over northern districts of Assam including North Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Sonitpur districts.
Over 57,000 people have been affected due to floods in Assam, more than 100 villages have been damaged and 1500 hectares of crop land have been spoilt.
During last 24 hours, Silchar received 24 mm of rainfall. Cherrapunji in Meghalaya also received 174 mm of rainfall.
Now, we expect that after 24 hours, rain intensity will decrease over Assam and Meghalaya as the cyclonic circulation has become less marked over the region. The low-pressure area which was over Gangetic West Bengal has now moved towards Bihar and adjoining areas. Therefore, the flow of southerly winds from Bay of Bengal will now be moderate, reducing the intensity of rainfall over Northeast India. Gradually, situation will start improving over this region.
