Flood threat looms large over Bihar, East Uttar Pradesh

July 26, 2016 6:12 PM |

Floods in BiharBihar and East Uttar Pradesh are the flood prone regions during the Monsoon season. Both the states are located in the foothills of Himalayas, which makes them vulnerable for the vigorous Monsoon showers.

However, this is not the only reason for the floods over the states. The other key reason for triggering floods across the states is the neighbouring country of Nepal. Nepal shares its border with both Bihar and East Uttar Pradesh. Moreover, catchment areas of most rivers of Nepal lie in these two eastern states.

At present, Monsoon has been vigorous over Nepal, giving extremely heavy Monsoon showers over several parts. In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, Surkhet in Nepal has recorded 203 mm of rains, Pokhara 223 mm, Simra 97 mm, Kathmandu 87 mm, Bhairawa 72 mm, Dang 72 mm, and Dhangadhi 59 mm.

With this, most of the rivers in the country have swelled and are flowing above the mark. The excess rain water will now gush towards Bihar and East Uttar Pradesh. This will further aggravate the flood like situation which has been already prevailing over Indian states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

Districts of Bihar such as Kishanganj, Purnea, Saharsha and Saupal are already reeling under the floods. Moreover, local rivers in Uttar Pradesh such as Ghagra, Sharda and Rapti are also flowing above the danger levels.

According to Skymet Weather, intensity of rain will reduce over Nepal but water will keep flowing to the Indian states. Moreover, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh will also continue receiving rains of varying intensity during the next few days.
