Flood Situation Unlikely To Improve Over Northeast India, More Heavy Rains Next Week

July 5, 2024 2:07 PM |

Northeast India is reeling under flood situation in many parts and more so, for Assam Valley and Arunachal Pradesh. Nearly 29 districts of Assam covering 3000 villages have been affected. Over 21 lakh people have faced flood fury and are under government protection. Earlier, Upper Assam was ravaged and now the situation has become grim in the Lower Assam, as well. Lower Assam condition will worsen further.

Before time onset of monsoon over northeastern parts started the woes for the region, early in the season. Incessant rains in the catchment areas triggered heavy outflow and the mighty Brahmaputra raged twice so far, threatening life and material resources. There is no major respite expected, at least in the next 10 days.

A cyclonic circulation is likely over coastal parts of North Odisha and adjoining West Bengal. This will fuel lot of moisture, with southerly and southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal, over the entire region. Lower Assam will be more vulnerable to inclement weather conditions. Places at risk will include Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Golpara, Kamrup, Nalbari and Guwahati.  Moderate rainfall, with isolated heavy spell will continue on either side of Brahmaputra over Upper Assam, as well.

Rains are likely to intensify further at the start of next week. Even, the districts of Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Lakhimpur, Golaghat, Jorhat,  Sivasagar and Majuli will come under the wrath of raging waters of Brahmaputra and tributaries. Situation will ease out only when some strong system forms over North Bay of Bengal. There are no signs, as of now, for such a situation developing. Northeastern parts will have to brave to face fury of monsoon rains, at least till mid-July.
