Flood situation may worsen in Allahabad, Varanasi

August 26, 2013 6:43 PM |

With Ganga and Yamuna flowing above danger mark near Allahabad and Varanasi, the forecast of moderate rain may further aggravate the flood situation here.

Rain is expected to increase in east Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand in next 24 hours  as the cyclonic circulation after forming a low pressure area may enter the land from the east coast. Isolated places in the region could also receive heavy rain. The period of moderate rain could continue for 48 to 72 hours.

Over a dozen localities including Chandpur Salori, Salori, Gayatri Nagar, Kailashpuri and Shivpuri, have been affected by floods in Allahabad. A large number of families have shifted to relief camps. However, many are still staying put in their flooded houses.  According to reports, over 50,000 people have been affected by the flood across the district.

Meanwhile, the situation in Varanasi isn’t any different as Ganga has entered the streets and serpentine lanes near Dashashwamedh Ghat, Bengali Tola and nearby areas. The residential areas of Nagwa, Samne Ghat and Asi have also been badly affected due to the floods.  Ganga is already flowing above the danger mark and is on continuous increasing trend.
