Flood hit areas of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are expected to get relief as rain is likely to decrease in the next two days. Madhya Pradesh and east Uttar Pradesh were battling floods for past one week due to two back to back weather systems.
After emerging in the Bay of Bengal, the weather system pounded these regions with heavy to very heavy rain. Rain caused floods as water levels in Ganga, Yamuna and Narmada continued to remain above danger mark.
Over 134 people have been killed in various rain-related incidents this monsoon in Madhya Pradesh, out of which 25 died last week following heavy downpour that flooded half a dozen districts in the state.
The affected districts are Dewas, Sehore, Hoshangabad, Khargone, Harda and Betul. A total of 38,200 people from 106 villages across these six districts were affected due to floods.
In Uttar Pradesh, More than 3.5 lakh people have been affected by the floods in 112 villages especially those situated on the banks of the Ganga and Yamuna. Rain-related incidents claimed 264 lives in the state this monsoon. Heavy downpour in the adjoining hills and water released into rivers from the upstream dams and barrages in Uttarakhand and Nepal also added to the flood woes here.
In Bihar, the flood situation appears to be improving in the districts along the upstream of the river Ganga. The level of water in the upstream of the river Ganga has been going down in Bhojpur, Buxar and Patna districts up to Gandhi Ghat in Patna. But, in the downstream of the river, six districts Samastipur, Begusarai, Khagaria, Bhagalpur and Katihar in north Bihar and Munger in south Bihar have been severely hit by floodwaters.
