Flood situation in Assam still grim, claims one life

AssamFlood 2The flood situation in Assam continues to be grim. On Sunday, torrential rains in Narayanpur area of the Lakhimpur district claimed one life. Reportedly, he was washed away by the flood waters.

In fact, nearly two lakh people have been affected due to flash floods in about seven districts of the state.

The Brahmaputra River is flowing above the danger mark in several places. Its tributaries like the Dikhow and the Dhansiri are also flowing above the danger level.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), about 176,951 people have been marooned in the state. The worst affected places include Lakhimpur, Golaghat, Morigaon, Jorhat, Dhemaji and Biswanath.

About 25 relief camps across the state have given shelter to more than 5,000 people, displaced by floods.

State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have reached the vulnerable areas.

Skymet Weather predicts more showers in Assam for at least next 48 hours. Therefore, the situation will worsen. Moreover, continuous rains will also hinder relief work.
