Though weathermen have ruled out the possibility of flood-like situation but scars of last year’s severe flood are still engraved quite deep in people’s mind. In December 2015, Chennai came to a standstill, as it battled worst rains in nearly 100 years that had also broken several century-old rainfall records.
Now during the same time period this year, Cyclone Nada has developed in southeast Bay of Bengal.
Moving closer to the Tamil Nadu coast, the system is presently centered at 7.8°N and 85.7°E, about 820 km in east-southeast of Chennai, 770 km east-southeast of Puducherry and 490 km east-southeast of Trincomalee, Sri Lanka.
With this, sky has already become cloudy and rains are likely to follow soon. We can expect light to moderate rains to commence from Wednesday evening.
As the system nears the coast, the intensity of rains is likely to intensify significantly during the next 24 hours. According to Skymet Weather, moderate to heavy rains with isolated very heavy showers are likely to lash several parts of Chennai on December 1 and 2.
However, meteorologists expect that the situation will not be as grim as last year but water logging cannot be ruled out.
According to Mahesh Palawat, chief meteorologist, Skymet Weather, “The present weather system is moving at a very rapid pace. Though it has intensified into a cyclonic storm but it will be for a brief period. The system will clear away from the region in the maximum time span of 24-36 hours, unlike the weather system last year that affected Chennai for 3-4 days.”
