Despite making a good start, the maiden week of the four-month long Southwest Monsoon has ended with deficit rains.

From June 1 to June 7, the country has recorded 17.5 mm of rain against the normal average of 23.9 mm, leading to rain deficiency by 27%.

Out of 36 sub-divisions, 6 pockets recorded excess rainfall and 8 pockets had normal rains. While, 9 were deficient, 12 were scanty and 1 pocket had no rains.

As expected, the major contribution came from Peninsular India, that too from Kerala and Coastal Karnataka. However, Northeast India that usually witnesses good rains during this time, did not record rains up to the mark.

Surprisingly, the most deficient pocket of Marathwada and Madhya Maharashtra regions of Maharashtra ended with excess and normal rains, respectively in the week gone by.

Monsoon forecast

The present weather conditions are indicating that rains are likely to pick up pace and shade better than this week.

Along with the West Coast, weather models are showing that Northeast India will observe significant increase in the intensity of rains.
